Migrating from server 2003 to 2008/2012

    Hi there,
So we have a 2003 server running Filemaker 9 server. The server is on its last legs. We plan on moving/upgrading the server to 2008 or 2012.
Before we do this would it be advisable to upgrade to a newer version of Filemaker like 12 or 13? I already spoke to their support and they said I can't do an upgrade to 13, I would need to purchase a volume license.

The current server uses Extensis Portfolio as well along with IIS. Does filemaker make a utility to copy all the current filmaker functionalty over to a new server?

    Regards.

The files themselves would have to be converted if you upgrade to FileMaker verson 12 or 13, and both the FileMaker Pro client (on all relevant workstations) and FileMaker Server would have to be upgraded simultaneously. If, on the other hand, you can get your hands on FileMaker Server 11, you can continue to use the same actual database files (FIleMaker 9 and 11 use the same file format) and you can continue to use existing installed copies of FileMaker 9 up until and unless you start adding features to your files that are not supported by FileMaker 9.

Whether you decide to convert your files from .fp7 format to .fmp12 format or not, you do not need "a utility to copy all the current filemaker functionality over to a new server". The new server will come with IIS (part of the OS) and you would install Extensis Portfolio (it's not part of FileMaker and the services it provides are available for all hosted server applications, so it isn't a "filemaker functionality"). Then move the actual database files over, perhaps by attaching an external drive with them on it and using the server console's "upload files" button to move them properly into the FmServer environment.

    Thank you for the reply!
It sounds alot "easier" just upgrading to 11. In terms of OS can we first put the 9 version on a new 2008/20012 install and then upgrade to 11? Does 9 work with 2008 or 2012?
