If anyone feels like doing a guest blog article, just send me a concept or even a full article.

Considering myself a beginner, and just an enthusiast even after 5 years, I wouldn't mind seeing some stuff aimed at beginners. An article (I'm sure there are plenty of snippets around) about the best practices for starting to build a database for one.
I've seen, from people who post to these forums, myself included, trying to jump right in without getting as much education as possible. Going too far 'down the rabbit hole' only to discover a total rebuild is in order.
Performing the due diligence, proper planning, naming conventions, etc. kind of gets forgotten.
It's covered in pretty good detail in the FMTS, the "Missing Manuals", and in super good detail in your videos, but seems to get ignored.
I've seen a number of posts to the effect of "...I just got FileMaker yesterday. How do I (pick one):
    --relate records
--get the primary key into the child record (
--write a script...? " and things you will easily know with a little education under their belt. It's hard to resist to just start building.

Another article I would like, but this is more like a book or download, would be a collection of basic building blocks. Something to the effect of files like:

-A relationship with a join table.
-A conditional value list set up, 3 deep.
-A couple of different sub-summary reports-basic to more advanced.
-Parsing, especially dates (seems like the 'Trying to figure out how old' calculation question comes up at least once a month.
-How to properly set up a layout with a custom theme (step by step for beginners) and why it's important. I think this is pretty important before you get 50 layouts deep.
Many times people post sample files to help, would be nice if there was a thread dedicated to them. Of course YouTube is loaded with some of this stuff too. But a one stop source is always helpful.

I have found as the versions change and new features are added, there's an initial buzz of great ideas and uses, but it kind of wanes over the years. For example Popover and slide panels, created alot of ideas and samples, but now not so much. So for the beginner jumping in on 15, it is a little hard to find the best ideas/best practices.

But the bottom line is you and David Head are doing IMO a great job with these articles. They are well read and received, even if people don't take a few minutes to write a thank you.

I agree about writing beginner articles wholeheartedly. Any chance you are volunteering to write one?

"All the things I did wrong?" lol
I'm heading off for vacation for a week. There will be lots of down time. I wouldn't mind taking a crack at it.

Actually, that would be a great article. I'm totally serious. All the things I did wrong and what I learned from it! Have a great time on vacation!
