Top Menu ("File Edit View Insert" etc) Not Showing Up - Please Help

    Hi all,

I'm a newbie to FileMaker Pro. I somehow managed to hide the top row menu in my database. Example A) show the menu in question - the basic features of File,Edit,View, etc etc
Example B) is my current file, where this menu is hidden or unavailable.

I have no idea how I did this but it's a major problem. This is a bit time sensitive as well, so if anyone knows how to show this menu, you win a year's worth of free karma.

    Many thanks,

    - Brett

I had exactly the same issue, and I ended up putting a button on my main layout that toggles "Show/Hide Menubar".

I then decided that I did not want to have to go back to the main layout to be able to toggle on the menbar if I ever was on a layout where the menu was hidden, I created a script with the show/hide Menubar as the sole step, then dragged that script to the very top of the script tree in Script Workspace so that it is now run by simply pressed CTL+1 from anywhere in the system.

With the help of Steve Romig from FileMaker (thank you Steve!) I was able to find a solution.

    I followed these steps:
    1. Open FileMaker Pro with no files open (or at least the file you want to recover closed)
    2. Choose FILE > RECOVER
    3. Choose the file you want to recover and click SELECT
    4. Verify the name of the recovered file and click SAVE

This returned the menu bar on the recovered file. Huzzah!!!

This file is probably OK to use; what needed "recovery" was probably an index that controls what menus to display (and that, in turn, is used to support custom menus). A corrupted index is not a horribly worrisome issue.

But as a general rule you should not rely on a recovered file for future use.

In particular, if a file needs recovering in order to open, it has been damaged. Recovery actually writes over damaged portions of a file with meaningless zeros; it's purpose is to enable you to rescue the data in a corrupted file. It does not "fix" a corrupted file; a file that has been recovered is not restored to pristine condition!
